Preface
Twic East Dinka of Jonglei State: Five Years of Floods (2020–2025)
This book is dedicated to the resilient people of Twic East County in Jonglei State, South Sudan, who endured five consecutive years of devastating floods between 2020 and 2025. It is also dedicated to those who lost their lives, homes, livestock, farms, schools, churches, and livelihoods during one of the most challenging periods in the history of the Twic East community.
The floods of 2020–2025 were not ordinary seasonal events. They transformed villages into islands, displaced thousands of families, destroyed agricultural lands, disrupted education, increased disease outbreaks, and forced communities to adapt to a new reality. Across Jonglei State, recurring floods became a humanitarian and environmental crisis, affecting hundreds of thousands of people and causing long-term social and economic hardships.
The purpose of this book is to document the experiences, struggles, resilience, and survival strategies of the people of Twic East during these five difficult years. It seeks to preserve historical records for future generations, provide valuable information for researchers and policymakers, and honor the courage of communities that continued to endure despite overwhelming challenges.
This publication highlights the impact of flooding on the five Payams of Twic East—Lith, Kongor, Nyuak, Ajuong, and Pakeer—and examines how communities responded through traditional coping mechanisms, humanitarian assistance, local leadership, and collective action. The book also explores the broader environmental and climate-related factors contributing to the recurring floods affecting Jonglei State and other parts of South Sudan. The 2020 floods alone affected more than one million people across South Sudan, with Jonglei among the hardest-hit regions.
Beyond documenting suffering, this book tells a story of determination and hope. Families rebuilt homes multiple times, children continued their education under difficult conditions, and communities supported one another despite limited resources. Their resilience deserves recognition and preservation.
It is our hope that this book will serve as both a historical record and a call to action for governments, humanitarian organizations, development partners, researchers, and community leaders to invest in long-term flood mitigation, infrastructure development, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods for the people of Twic East and the wider Jonglei region.
May the stories contained in these pages inspire future generations to remember the lessons of these floods and work toward a safer and more prosperous future.
